Bonfire night is just around the corner and while its a time for us to enjoy the sparkle of fireworks it can be a nightmare for our pets. The loud bangs and sudden flashes can leave them scared and anxious.
Dogs and Cats may respond with
* Shaking, trembling or hiding
* Barking and whining
*Pacing around the house, panting and drooling
*Trying to escape or become destructive
So how can we help them feel more safe and secure?
1. Create a Cosy Safe Space
Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your pet can hide away. A snug corner with their bed and blankets and favourite toy. Consider placing a jumper of yours in their bed as your scent may comfort them.
2. Keep them indoors
Close windows, draw the curtains and put on calming music or the TV to distract from outside noise.
3. Tire them out
A good play session and long scent walk in daylight can work wonders for calming your dog in general.
4. Stay Calm yourself
Pets can pick up on our emotions, so if you seem relaxed they are more likely to mimic. Don't be afraid to comfort them and reassure if they seek your company. It is a myth that this reinforces anxious behaviour. Your dog will feel safer with you.
5. Calming aids can help
Pheromone diffusers, Thunder shirts, and herbal remedies ( we like Skullcap and Valerian) may also help to calm your dog.
6. Chat with your vet
If your dog gets particularly anxious it may be worth consulting with your vet for advice. They can prescribe something to help your dog stay relaxed.
Just in case!
If you do need to let your dog out in the garden, make sure they have their collar on with their ID Tag. If the unimaginable happens and they run, it can make a big difference in your dog being quickly reunited with you.
Final thoughts
With a little preparation, we can help ease our pets through fireworks season. Keep them cosy indoors, Offer comfort and distraction and try some calming aids. We can make sure they feel safe and secure during the bangs and flashes.
